It seems at times like CBD it taking over the world. People everywhere are using it to help with anxiety, insomnia, depression, and chronic pain, and the United Kingdom is no different.
CBD use in the UK doubled between 2017 and 2018, and the trend is only going to continue. As it is in most countries, CBD is perfectly legal in the UK and it’s found its way into all sorts of products. It’s still something of a newcomer to the supplement/home medicine scene, though, so you may have some questions.
But first, what is CBD?
CBD stands for cannabidiol. It’s one of the substances produced by the various strains of Cannabis plants called cannabinoids. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol is another one, and that’s the one that’s famous for getting you high.
All Cannabis plants produce CBD, including marijuana and hemp. CBD won’t get you high, but it does have a number of health benefits. Because it isn’t a drug, CBD is legal in many places where marijuana is not.
CBD works by interacting with the body and brain through the body’s very own Endocannabinoid system (ECS).
The ECS is a complex network of cell receptors and neurotransmitters that are responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body. Cannabinoid receptors are spread throughout the entire body, with largest concentrations in the central and peripheral nervous systems, and in the immune system. The ECS improves the communication between all those systems.
The ECS also controls a wide range of biological functions, including sleep, mood, temperature control, immune response, pain and pleasure perception, fertility, memory, and appetite. Whenever something wrong happens with your health, the ECS will release its natural cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) to restore the balance and bring you up and about.
Benefits of CBD
First, a disclaimer: relatively little scientific research has been done on CBD, because it’s only recently been legalized.
Most of the benefits of CBD that we know of are benefits that are reported by users. That doesn’t mean that they aren’t real; on the contrary, real people are experiencing real benefits.
One of the most sought-after benefits of CBD is pain relief. Whether applied as a topical salve or taken as a capsule, CBD can often provide relief for those suffering from chronic pain. Arthritis sufferers in particular seem to benefit.
CBD acts as an anti-inflammatory substance in the body, and it reliefs pain by reducing inflammation.
It can also be an effective treatment for anxiety. This is because CBD can bind to the brains serotonin receptors. It can also help insomnia. Finally, it may help to break addictions by altering the neural pathways that control addictive behavior.
Types of CBD
CBD products are usually made with either CBD isolate, broad spectrum hemp extract, or full spectrum hemp extract.
CBD Isolate is pure CBD, and it’s a white, crystalline powder. You can buy products made with it, or buy it as a powder to make your own CBD products. It’s often used when a product needs to have 0.0% THC content, since even hemp usually has a fraction of a percent of THC in it.
Broad spectrum hemp extract is a confusing term because it’s used differently by different manufacturers. Sometimes it means the same thing as full spectrum hemp extract, and other times it means that it has most of the compounds that full spectrum extract has, but not all.
Full spectrum hemp extract contains CBD along with all of the other cannabinoids found in hemp (including very small, legal amounts of THC) and the terpenes which give hemp it’s characteristic smell and taste. Those extra cannabinoids and terpenes may enhance the effects of CBD, and so its often considered desirable to use full spectrum hemp oil instead of CBD isolate.
Laws in UK about CBD
CBD is legal in the UK as long as it contains no more than .2% THC. In fact, some of prescription medicines in the UK are now made with CBD as the active ingredient.
Specifically, the CBD oil must be made from a strain of industrial hemp approved by the EU (it’s unclear if the EU approval would still be necessary if Brexit happens).
What to look for when you buy CBD oil…
The first thing you should look for are lab test results from a third party lab. If someone selling CBD products is unable or unwilling to share that kind of lab work with you, don’t buy from them. Their product is almost certainly not what they say it is.
Third-party lab testing is the industry standard in most places, but in the UK the CBD industry is still playing catch-up. Plenty of people are still selling fake CBD products, and some of them contain dangerous substances.
You should also look at the ingredient list. CBD oil should list either full spectrum hemp extract or CBD isolate, along with a carrier oil (usually MCT oil) and little else. If it’s a flavored oil you’ll see the flavoring ingredients there, and there may be citric acid or another natural preservative. In general, though, the ingredient list should be short.
The dosage should also be clearly listed, including the CBD content for the whole bottle and the content per serving.
Where can you buy CBD in the UK?
Online is probably your best bet. You will find CBD for sale in stores, but the best selection will be online, and you generally won’t be able to view lab results in a store. Our favorite CBD companies, CBDfx and Endoca both have excellent online stores and ship throughout the United Kingdom.
We wouldn’t recommend buying CBD from Amazon because technically, it’s not allowed to sold on Amazon. A lot of the sellers you see on Amazon usually mislabel their products so they can get away with selling it on Amazon. Also, most of those products don’t even contain CBD – just hemp seed oil or something similar.

How to Properly Dose CBD Oil
There’s no one right answer to this, because it depends on your reason for taking CBD and your body’s response to it.
Generally, though, experts recommend “micro dosing” daily. This means taking small doses, less than 10mg, every day, so that there is constantly a small amount of CBD in your system. Then, in moments when your pain or anxiety is especially bad, take a larger dose.
You’ll need to experiment some before you find a dose that works best for you. Start with lower doses and work your way up if the low doses don’t do anything. You should feel a difference if the dose is the right strength. Your anxiety should ease, you should feel calmer and more at peace, or your pain should lessen or go away entirely.
If you aren’t experiencing those things, try a slightly higher dosage. If you’re micro dosing, it may take a day or two to start feeling a difference, so don’t rush things.
